-- Free show on Governor's Island this Saturday
Free show on Governor's Island this Saturday
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tomorrow, August 4th, Antibalas will be performing a free show on Governor's Island in New York Harbor.Every Saturday this year in August, the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council presents free New World Music concerts, featuring a diverse roster of international artists on historic Governors Island. Hop on the free ferry with a picnic and enjoy the sun.Admission to all events is FREE.The show starts at 12PM.
Where's Governors Island?Governor's Island sits in the heart of New York Harbor, roughly 800 yards off the southern tip of Manhattan and half that distance from the Brooklyn waterfront. The only way onto the island is by Ferry from Manhattan.The island's waterfront offers some of the most dramatic and impressive vistas of the New York skyline and New York Harbor, including the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The northern half of the Island, consisting of approximately 92 acres, has been designated as both a National Historic Landmark District and a New York City Historic District.Until 2003, when the island was transferred back to the State of New York, the island was off limits to most civilians. Take advantage of this new spot that most New Yorkers have never had the chance to visit before!HOW TO GET THERE:Take the 4 or 5 train to Bowling Green; or the R train to Whitehall Street (the 1 train is not running to South Ferry on the weekends, so don't take it!).Skip over to the Battery Maritime Building Slip 7, between Broad and Whitehall Streets, just North of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal and take a FREE 7-minute Ferry to Governors Island.Free ferries run every half hour starting at 10AM.Jump off of the ferry at Governors Island and head to Colonels Row for the show and enjoy the day on the island. Feel free to bring a picnic. There will be vendors on the island as well.Ferries return every hour to Manhattan, with the last Ferry departing at 5PM.
